Why Study Literature?

At GCCA, Literature classes are devoted to the study of primary sources. While there may not be a clearly-defined, signed and sealed “western canon,” we still recognize the existence of an ongoing, more-or-less continuous literary tradition that stems from Christian commitment. This tradition often harkens back, with carefully-cultivated allusion, to many ancient or classical sources that reflect God’s truth in various ways even though they were written by non-Christians (as Dante refers to Virgil, or as Milton to Homer). Real openness to God’s truth wherever it may be found, gives us freedom to read appreciatively and discerningly from a wide array of sources outside the Bible — and not just the “western” ones, either!

For Such a Time as This

Our students are learning that God may call them into politics or may call them to stand before kings, or He may call them to risk their lives by tending the sick, or He may call them to military service to defend His people. Whatever they do in life, they know it will fail if they do not serve in the name of the Lord; and they cannot serve in the name of the Lord if they are not in His word listening for His leading and learning His ways.

Communicating With Wisdom and Grace

Excellent teachers of the art of rhetoric would require that, before one may argue against an opponent’s viewpoint, one must state that viewpoint in terms which one's opponent agrees accurately portray it. It’s said that the best debaters are capable of arguing the opposite side’s views better than the opposite side itself. The art of rhetoric - the winsome expression of all the knowledge and know-how gathered up in the years before - being the crowning stage of a classical and Christian education, those of us in this movement should have a better handle on this than most.
